Pre-K & in the Pipeline to Prison?
A child who falls behind in kindergarten, is at risk of failing to learn the basics in 1st & 2nd grade, and to continue failing in 3rd grade, even if the teachers are skilled. Very rarely, tutors and mentors may be of great help.
Unskilled childcare may not prepare a child for learning, or for adapting to a classroom environment. Many Head Start programs have learned to work with parents and children so that the transition to Kindergarten becomes a success. What happens after pre-school depends on the skill of the teachers with support of the parents.
Children who fail to read at grade level in 3rd grade have little chance of catching up, and are far more likely to drop out before or during high school.
What happens to school dropouts? They are most likely to enter the pipeline to prison. There are 3,030,000 children dropping out of U.S. high schools every year, and they commit 75% of U.S. crimes.
We can change this scenario. Take action at http://www.supportheadstart.org/9544/tell-congress-president-to-end-squestration/
Or write a letter to your local editor about how Head Start, or pre-school has prepared your child for kindergarten, 1st & 2nd grade.
